Beer - 12 Beers of Christmas Prelude

Tomorrow, December 14, will mark twelve days to Christmas. I thought I'd take this opportunity to blog here a beer each day - the 12 Beers of Christmas - primarily focusing on Australian craft beers...but with a couple of awesome, impressive, unusual or "Christmasy" international beers also thrown in (because during this time I'll be attending a couple of special beer events where I'll only be drinking such beers).

I do realise that the more traditional types will insist that the "12 Days of Christmas" actually start on Christmas day...and then count 12 days up to January 6th (yes, I've read the wikipedia entry), but for the sake of this little blog stunt...I'm following the modern populist US concept...leading into and including Christmas Day.

Each blog will only be short, hopefully sweet and probably photo-centric. I'll aim to be blogging beers that I have not mentioned here before.

And no...they will not be all Christmas ales. As much as I'd love to run with only "Christmas" beers, there are only about three local beers labeled as Christmas ales (see the pic below)...and the many international Christmas brews are generally too expensive or hard to get.

I'd love for anyone and everyone to join me with blogging or at least tweeting a craft beer a day up until Christmas. If you do...tag it with #12beersofxmas

Bar - The Lambs Go Bar (Posthumous Post)

Last night a beautiful yet slightly grungy and kitsch but ultimately awesome Melbourne bar ended its life as The Lambs Go Bar.

I am sad to say that yesterday was actually my first visit (and last) to Lambs Go Bar, which was tucked away in an inconspicuous bluestone building, just off Smith St, Collingwood. I knew of the bar and its reputation as a decent destination for good beer and casual good times. However, I had just never made the trip there.

But now, after 10 years in operation and with the current Lease expiring, the owner has decided to hand the property to their son, who will most likely convert the bar into some sort of "classy wine bar restaurant" (so I heard over a pint in the beer garden). Hmmm. So, with one final opportunity to experience Lambs Go Bar, I headed there yesterday afternoon and discovered that I should have visited the place so much sooner, because...I loved it.

Without being any more than it needed to be, with plenty of wear-and-tear, this bar was just a great little (almost "secret") destination for enjoying good beer and good people.

Full of character and colour, without being bright, the bar was small but not squishy. With a front bar, pool room, rear dining room and tiny but excellent beer garden, The Lambs Go Bar was homely. There was plenty of sitting space with couches, benches and various chairs, as well as enough table space. On this occasion it did seem to be awfully chilly inside (was the air conditioning turned up to 11?), but outside in the enclosed beer garden, it was perfect.

The bar had 4 beer taps, with one hand pump tap pouring a rotating ale from 3Ravens - on this occasion it was the English Ale (which we enjoyed pints and then a jug of). Last night the other taps were the St Arnou Pilsner, Mountain Goat Steam Ale and Carlton Draught. Behind the bar was a fridge full of other 100 bottled beers from all over, lead by local craft beers, which were easily navigated via a clearly formatted and understandable beer menu book.

We couldn't stay too long...after a long draining day of Christmas shopping and empty pocket with the usual pre-Christmas cash shortage. Therefore, with one final farewell via a bottle of Bridge Road Brewers Bling IPA, we were out the door just as the real crowd started to flow in for a the "Slaughter of the Lambs" festivities.

All is not lost though, as most of what was Lambs Go Bar will be transferred to the newly renovated Rainbow Hotel, close by in Fitzroy. The brothers behind The Lambs Go Bar - Jason and Adam King - have taken a 15-year lease on the Rainbow and plan to reopen it soon with a focus on beer, food and live music (...my kind of combination!!). Check out the full story on The Crafty Pint website.

Therefore, I will not make the same mistake again of forsaking for so long a local watering hole when I hear such good things about it from many.

And for now...it is goodbye The Lambs Go Bar...

Beers - A Very Beery Christmas update

A quick update on the wife and my plan for A Very Beery Christmas, which I posted about recently.

Thanks to Ray, Bar Manager of Biero Bar, I now have a can of beautiful CRAFT BEER for our BBQ Beer Can Chicken...

Craft beer in a can...the Anderson Valley Poleeko Gold Pale Ale (imported by Innspire)

After expecting to submit ourselves to a can of VB, we can now keep the full cooking and drinking menu to pure quality craft beer, thanks to the addition of this American Pale Ale, the Poleeko Gold Pale Ale from Anderson Valley Brewing Company.

Hopefully this can will actually last until Christmas Day...because I am awfully tempted to crack it so I can finally try craft beer in a can. But yes, THANKS RAY! Biero once again proves a treasure trove of good beer.

Also, last weekend the wife baked a trial run of Welsh Rarebit for our Christmas Lunch starter. Inspired by the rarebit found on the Red Hill Brewery menu, she first baked bread from scratch using the Bridge Road Brewers Beechworth Pale Ale and the sauce using the Jamieson Brown Ale. It all worked beautifully...

Bread baked with Bridge Road Brewers Beechy Pale Ale.

Welsh Rarebit, cooked using the Jamieson Brown Ale.

In other Christmas beery news - I picked up an early Christmas present for myself from Slowbeer today:

The "Phoenix" Imperial Red Ale by Hargreaves Hill Brewing Company.

I am not normally one to splash out on such an expensive or high-end beer without really knowing anything about it...but I respect the recommendation of The Crafty Pint who notes "...we don't do reviews at Crafty, so we'll just say no self-respecting beer lover should miss this: Hargreaves Hill Phoenix"

"...there’s only 350 individually numbered, wax-sealed 750ml champagne bottles available and you really, really don’t want to miss out."

This very limited Imperial Red Ale has been brewed to mark the one year anniversary of Hargreaves Hill's return to brewing following the destruction of the original brewery in the Black Saturday bushfires of 2009.

I scored bottle No 45 of 350. They will not last long at all. So if you're keen to buy one...get along to the good beer shops very very soon! I think this particular bottle will do nicely to see in the new year.

And if you can not afford the Phoenix or miss out...then I highly recommend the latest Rare Breed offering from Mountain Goat, who have come full circle with their 4th release of their speciality seasonal brew. When they released their first Rare Breed just under a year ago, Mountain Goat started with an India Pale Ale, which is now back and just as deliciously brilliant as before. For only $10 a bottle, it is a special beer worth enjoying during these cooler Summer days!

The Mountain Goat Rare Breed India Pale Ale, December 2010 version. Fantastic!

And for the taste of something new, Victoria's most recently opened microbrewery - Mornington Peninsula Brewery - are bring their beers up to Melbourne for a free Friday afternoon tasting at Purvis Beer on Friday 17th December, from 4:30pm. A little more info about this tasting can be found on The Crafty Pint website.

I tasted the Mornington Peninsula Porter for the first time at Biero Bar on Wednesday night ($5 pint night!) and very much enjoyed it. It is quite a straight forward porter, true to style, rich and robust without being overwhelming or too malty. It has decent hints of dark chocolate and a little something else, a spice maybe, that I found hard to place (probably due to earlier enjoying a pint of BrewDog Hardcore IPA!).
