Good on ya for finally getting around ...Hey James,

Good on ya for finally getting around to putting up your thoughts and experiences of Good Beer Week. Thanks for the mention in your Slowbeer post.

Mate, I really tried to pace myself over the week, but like you struggled by the end. Seeing I didn't really know any industry types, I made it all about going out and tasting beer. Still, the beer community is good enough where everywhere I went I ended up meeting so many people of differing backgrounds and interests in beer.
The diversity of beers available just shows how ready melbourne was for this sort of event, and with the short lead time, how much there was still available to do. In a way it was almost like people reacted instinctually, and was great to see the diversity of things that came from that. With it looking like it will be on next year, I hope there is even more diversity. Diversity with accessibility is probably the things I like most of what beer represents.
Accessibility I think could be improved. While people's radars are now up after 'stumbling' across this first Good Beer Week, I think more could be done for begginner drinkers. How do we attract people to beer? What is a good beer for people to start appreciating beer through? What culture do we have with beer, and what culture do we want to promote through this event? These are the things I reckon we can now think about for the next one. As we found, the beer is here to appreciate, and the people are interested. If anything there wasn't enough going on. Most events sold out and very rarely was I alone with a beer, even in a week where I took the week off work and so started drinking pretty early each day. How big the next one becomes in terms of venues and events will be interesting to see. taking over something like Fed square is something doable with the interest shown, and would help promote the week to punters if done at the start. I guess though, a divide may occur between average punters and those more experienced with beer. Would this create 'underground' events, and more 'trade' events. I expect that would be a natural progression, but would it put the average punters offside?
Well, that is some of my thoughts coming from the week. I had a great week personally, getting to meet so many people, like yourself, and trying so many different beers, checking out venues I hadn't before. Through the events too, you see how beer has been an influence for those organising them, and what they want to promote beer as.

Anyway, I'll stop now.

Cheers mate.

John 'Beefy' Boganbeefyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04656914278097650652noreply@blogger.com
